What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Józef's journey through the sanatorium repeatedly reanimates the past and makes time behave unpredictably.
The dilapidated sanatorium, elaborate decorations, costumes, and recurring ruins create the film's dominant visual language.
Has adapts Bruno Schulz's prose through grotesque folklore, ornate design, and an eschatological atmosphere rather than literal realism.
Józef finds the sanatorium physically ruined, unmanaged, and indifferent to its dying patients.
