What critics said
Critics broadly found the film an unusually eccentric showcase for its comedic cast whose slow-burn oddness and ridiculous love stories were entertaining for some but too impenetrable and irritating for others.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Lulu, Shane, Beverly, and the surrounding townspeople respond to eccentric crimes, romantic fixation, and theatrical spectacle with deliberately flat intensity.
The advertised one-night Beverly Luff Linn event draws Lulu, Shane, Beverly, and other eccentric figures into the same comic trajectory.
The central relationships are shaped by strange past connections, marital dissatisfaction, obsessive attraction, and hilariously mismatched expressions of desire.
The film's stylized characters, peculiar costumes, heightened delivery, and unusual event-centered world create a theatrical, constructed atmosphere.
