What critics said
Critics broadly found the film watchable but derivative, with strong performances and cinematography unable to overcome a middling screenplay and recycled Woody Allen themes.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Gatsby's wealthy family, upscale parties, historic hotel bars, and encounters with filmmakers and actors make elite Manhattan society a central environment.
The couple's weekend is repeatedly framed by rainy New York streets, with the weather accompanying shifts in intimacy and disillusionment.
Gatsby is a gambling, Cole Porter-loving college student who prefers Manhattan's cultural life to Yardley and approaches romance through cynicism and self-consciousness.
Ashleigh's interview with Roland Pollard and Gatsby's encounters with Chan Tyrell and former romantic connections unfold in parallel during the same weekend.
