What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Barney's bond with the malfunctioning digitally connected Ron develops against a culture that treats devices as ready-made best friends.
The film satirizes the social media age and the commercial promise of devices designed to manufacture friendship.
Socially awkward middle-schooler Barney struggles to fit in before Ron's malfunctions lead him toward less standardized friendship.
Ron's technical failures drive the action-packed comedy and give the device-centered premise its visual energy.
