What critics said
Critics found the reunion cast warm and entertaining but largely regarded the film as a formulaic retread of its predecessor with recycled jokes and uneven cultural commentary.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film reunites Akeem, Semmi, Clarence, and other returning characters decades after the original, repeatedly revisiting established comic bits.
Akeem moves between Zamundan court traditions, Nexdorian political pressure, and Lavelle's ordinary Queens upbringing.
Akeem's lack of a recognized son creates a dynastic crisis while Meeka and her sisters confront Zamunda's male-heir tradition.
Eddie Murphy plays Akeem alongside Clarence, Saul, and Randy Watson, while Arsenio Hall also performs multiple supporting roles.
