What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Jerry Black continues investigating the murdered girl after retirement because of his pledge to her mother, subordinating ordinary life to the search for the killer.
Jerry doubts the police arrest and reconstructs the case from partial clues, while the investigation steadily reveals how little can be securely known.
Jerry buys and operates an old gas station near the crime area, turning a remote mountain location into his surveillance base.
The film follows a solitary detective through child murder, failed certainty, and an increasingly oppressive pursuit rather than offering conventional procedural reassurance.
