What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film follows the White family collectively, especially Jesco White, rather than imposing a conventional redemption-centered protagonist.
The overview explicitly connects the family's poverty and dysfunction to West Virginia's environmentally and culturally damaging coal mining culture.
Shoot-outs, drug use, robberies, tap dancing, rehabilitation, and fatalistic reflection coexist in the film's portrait of the Whites.
Jesco and other mountain dancers are shown preserving a fading form of Appalachian dance amid social and economic decline.
