What critics said
Critics broadly find the film involving and gripping as a boots-on-the-ground battle depiction, while faulting its limited historical context and triumphalist patriotism.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The story concentrates on Major Harry Smith and his dispersed company during the Long Tan engagement rather than offering broad political context.
The film presents the battle as a defining episode in ANZAC history and emphasizes Australian and New Zealand soldiers' courage and solidarity.
The decisive engagement unfolds in pouring rain amid mud and shattered rubber trees, with ammunition scarcity and mounting casualties intensifying the atmosphere.
Critical discussion highlights the film's patriotic focus alongside the imperialist context and moral ambiguity of the Vietnam War.
