What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Montgomery Dark tells Sam a succession of stories while showing her around the Raven's End Mortuary.
The film emphasizes outstanding photography, macabre set design, and bodily or creaturely horror across its embedded stories.
The mortician's storytelling and the individual episodes combine gruesome situations with a deliberate don't-take-it-seriously comic streak.
Sam's interest in working at the strange mortuary provides the immediate narrative premise and entry point for the tales.
