What critics said
Critics generally found the film's premise and handsome production intriguing but judged its mashup of familiar storybook material muddled and lacking in genuine magic.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Alice and Peter are presented as siblings whose childhood adventures connect Wonderland-like and Neverland-like fantasy elements.
After tragedy and financial strain affect the family, Alice seeks a rabbit hole and Peter enters a magical realm.
The English countryside and London hardship are juxtaposed with rabbit-hole refuge, pirate play, and the Lost Boys' realm.
The children's tea parties, sword fights, and pirate adventures foreshadow their later movement into magical identities and realms.
