Failure to Launch
A deceptively gentle romantic comedy unfolds around Tripp, a comfortably adrift 35-year-old still living with his parents, and the increasingly elaborate scheme they concoct to nudge him toward independence. Unlike typical 'getting the kid out of the house' narratives, the film centers on the parents’ proactive, almost obsessive, intervention – hiring a “professional” to manufacture a romantic connection intended to motivate their son. This creates a playful, and often awkward, dynamic as Paula navigates a false relationship with Tripp, forcing both to confront their emotional avoidance and unexpectedly revealing a shared vulnerability. The film avoids easy laughs at Tripp’s expense, instead grounding the comedy in the well-meaning but misguided attempts of a family navigating modern adulting and the anxieties surrounding it. It’s a warm, observational look at the lengths we go to for loved ones, and the surprising detours that happen when trying to engineer a life path.
