What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Extended footage of the Algerian Sahara gives the desert the film's primary dramatic and contemplative presence.
The creation myth provides the sole sustained verbal framework for the desert imagery.
Mirage-like Sahara footage, sparse narration, and Leonard Cohen songs create an uncanny poetic atmosphere.
The film avoids explanatory documentary commentary, relying on myth, landscape, and song.
