What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The entire water-polo match turns Michele’s personal memory crisis and the political struggle over leadership into a comic competitive metaphor.
Michele’s identity as a P.C.I. leader is repeatedly challenged by tormentors, memories, and the absurd pressures surrounding the match.
The plot’s memory loss and leadership crisis are linked to the late-Cold-War crisis of Italian communism and the approaching fall of communism.
Strange figures, intrusive recollections, and the match’s exaggerated atmosphere turn political debate and psychological disturbance into surreal spectacle.
