What critics said
Critics broadly found the film visually charming, gently entertaining, and competently comic, but slight, insubstantial, and lacking the stronger ideas or persuasive romantic chemistry associated with Allen at his best.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The weekend party brings Andrew, Adrian, Maxwell, Dulcy, Leopold, and Ariel into overlapping emotional and sexual complications.
The central weekend party takes place at inventor Andrew Hobbs and Adrian's home, concentrating the ensemble's encounters in a private rural retreat.
Renowned philosopher Leopold's presence and the characters' intellectual, emotional, and sexual conversations shape the film's comic register.
The film is explicitly and loosely based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night.
