Critics broadly praised the performances, battle choreography, cinematography, visual effects, and production craft while criticizing the historical distortions, simplistic religious binary, nationalist propaganda, and uneven pacing.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film presents Tanhaji's fort campaign through exaggerated heroic imagery and a simplified moral conflict.
Virtual effects, computer graphics, crisp editing, and large-scale fort battles define the production's visual appeal.
Critics repeatedly identified the film's Hindu-Muslim binary and saffronized religio-nationalist perspective as central to its treatment of history.
Shivaji initially avoids involving Tanhaji because his son is about to marry, but Tanhaji chooses the fort mission despite that family event.
