What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Frank’s drafting, army assignment, and role as unit spokesman turn military bureaucracy into a source of recurring comic conflict.
Frank moves between the Bundeswehr, his petty-bourgeois family home, and hippie squatters while each group judges his behavior differently.
The story is set in 1980 West Germany, with the Berlin Wall and national division forming the historical backdrop.
Frank’s big mouth and inability to perform conventional obedience lead him to defend a virtual deserter despite pressure from both soldiers and pacifists.
