What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Catherine’s growing fear centers on the sinister darkness within her marriage as well as the house’s ghosts.
The family relocates from Manhattan to a historic Hudson Valley hamlet whose home carries a disturbing history.
The opening quotation, ghosts, and references to Emanuel Swedenborg frame the haunting through an explicitly spiritual worldview.
The film emphasizes Catherine’s settlement in the new home, marital suspicion, and eerie atmosphere over immediate shocks.
