What critics said
Critics broadly found the film lavish and intermittently engaging but unfocused, tonally inconsistent, and a cheesy adaptation lacking the romantic panache of Alexandre Dumas.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The imprisoned twin Philippe becomes the basis of the musketeers' plan to replace Louis XIV and address France's suffering.
Palaces, royal ceremonies, period costumes, and the iron mask create a strongly theatrical vision of Bourbon France.
Aramis, Athos, Porthos, and D'Artagnan are divided by their competing duties to friendship, the king, and the country.
Philippe's existence as Louis XIV's hidden twin drives the central replacement plot and the conflict among the musketeers.
