What critics said
Critics broadly found the high-concept premise and broad appeal understandable, but judged the film uneven as it shifted from Sandler comedy into heavy-handed sentimental drama.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Morty gives Michael a remote that can mute, skip, dub, and otherwise manipulate his life.
Michael uses the remote to bypass family arguments and accelerate his promotion, sacrificing time with Donna and their children.
The remote's comic conveniences lead Michael toward painful awareness of aging, death, and the moments he has skipped.
Michael's remote rapidly moves him through major stages of his career and family life rather than allowing him to experience them fully.
