What critics said
Critics broadly found the film handsome and ambitious but overly conventional, with its historical fiction and romance outweighing the engineering drama.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The story presents Gustave Eiffel and the Eiffel Tower's construction through an invented or heavily fictionalized romance with Adrienne Bourgès.
Eiffel's relationship with Adrienne is set against his bid to create a spectacular structure for the 1889 Paris World Fair.
The film emphasizes nineteenth-century Paris, engineering work, the World Fair, and the building of the Eiffel Tower.
Eiffel's encounter with Adrienne revives a connection rooted in their shared past and becomes central to the plot.
