What critics said
Critics broadly viewed the film as a thoughtful, well-paced, humanizing, and unusually plausible prison drama, while noting uneven performances and reliance on familiar genre conventions.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Critics specifically praised the film's unsettlingly plausible and least-sensationalistic depiction of prison life.
Earl Copan takes young prisoner Ron Decker under his wing while shielding him from predatory inmates and teaching him prison survival.
Earl's paternal care simultaneously connects Ron to his gang and complicates Ron's attempt to survive and leave prison.
The story remains centered on cells, prison corridors, guards, gangs, and the constrained movement of incarcerated men.
