What critics said
Critics found an uneven but energetic comedy horror whose eccentric premise and cast are undermined by inconsistent execution and a compromised horror cut.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The central campaign begins as recreational role playing before a summoned succubus turns foam weapons and plastic swords into inadequate survival tools.
The seemingly innocent prop book of spells contains a dark incantation that inadvertently summons the destructive succubus.
The film repeatedly contrasts fantasy-game equipment and medieval costumes with violent encounters against an extra-dimensional being.
Eric, Hung, Joe, and the LARP participants must navigate a real supernatural slaughter inside their shared fantasy subculture.
