What critics said
Critics broadly found the capable cast and queer-romance premise respectable but judged the adaptation surface-level, plodding, and unevenly performed.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Patrick's arrival prompts Marion and Tom to revisit seismic events from their earlier lives, linking past relationships to their older selves.
Tom and Patrick's relationship unfolds under the pressures surrounding gay identity in postwar Britain.
The younger characters' romance is shaped by the social conditions of mid-century Britain, while the older timeline reflects its lasting effects.
The central relationships depend on withheld emotion, secrecy, and the contrast between implied inner turmoil and outward composure.
