What critics said
Critics generally found the film a generic, action-heavy family diversion whose tenderness and occasional fun were outweighed by flat animation, weak humor, and an unfaithful treatment of Garfield's traditionally lazy character.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Garfield, Odie, and Vic are compelled to participate in a risky heist, shifting the character comedy into an action-driven caper.
Garfield's unexpected reunion with his long-lost father Vic makes their damaged relationship the film's principal emotional thread.
Garfield's life of sleeping, eating, and watching television is overturned when he and Odie are kidnapped and drawn into Vic's scheme.
The film adapts Jim Davis's iconic Garfield into a contemporary computer-animated action-comedy rather than focusing exclusively on his sedentary comic-strip persona.
