What critics said
Critics broadly found the film handsome and well acted but dramatically inert, overly contrived, and weakened by a trite melodramatic romance.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Theresa discovers Garrett's anonymous love letter in a bottle and uses it to locate him, making correspondence the central romantic mechanism.
Garrett's inability to make peace with his wife's early death obstructs his growing relationship with Theresa.
The bottle, sailing imagery, widowed shipbuilder, and tragic romantic conflict establish a strongly sentimental seaside melodrama.
Sailboats, sailing, the washed-ashore bottle, and Garrett's shipbuilding work shape the film's coastal visual identity.
