What critics said
Critics broadly regarded the film as a poorly acted, poorly written, stagey action fantasy whose entertaining B-movie energy occasionally offsets its weak storytelling.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Mathayus confronts rival kings, the Book of the Dead, sorcery, and warrior ghosts across a mythic ancient world.
The film pairs enthusiastic one-liners and a simpleton giant companion with heightened combat and supernatural threats.
Mathayus returns to mercenary life after his queen's death and the collapse of his kingdom, then fights to defend Ramusan's palace.
Talus's seizure of the Book of the Dead enables him to conjure warrior ghosts and intensifies the succession conflict.
