What critics said
Critics broadly agreed that Cate Blanchett gives a strong performance, but found the film's treatment of Veronica Guerin insufficiently nuanced and often formulaic.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film follows journalist Veronica Guerin's reporting career, family life, and confrontation with Dublin's drug barons.
Guerin researches and publishes allegations against powerful drug lords despite threats and attacks.
The story is rooted in 1990s Dublin's drug scene and the public response to organized narcotics crime.
The true-story premise and historical framing make Guerin's eventual assassination an ominous presence over her investigation.
