What critics said
Critics generally found the remake competently chilling and supported by Naomi Watts, but regarded it as a softened, less tense, and less inventive version of the Austrian original.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The twins suspect that the woman in their house is not their real mother, making identity uncertainty the central engine of suspense.
The mother's isolated house shifts from a refuge into a setting of suspicion, surveillance, and emotional danger.
Twin brothers Elias and Lucas interpret their mother's altered behavior through fear, suspicion, and increasingly extreme actions.
This English-language American production remakes the 2014 Austrian film while retaining its core family-identity premise.
