Critics found the film entertaining and accessible for children, with Zachary Gordon's likability helping its broad comic set pieces, though the overstuffed and predictable screenplay drew significant criticism.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Greg's video-game plans, beachside cabin trip, pool-party possibilities, and other vacation schemes repeatedly spiral into comic setbacks.
Greg clashes with Frank over video games, outdoor activity, and disappointing behavior, while Susan pursues her own summer plans for him.
Greg's choices affect Rowley, the Jefferson family, and his relationship with his parents as his attempts to have fun become increasingly costly.
The cabin stay, country-club intrusion, family disagreements, and other summer episodes are structured around increasingly over-the-top mishaps.
