Herbie is a miraculous Volkswagen with a mind of its own and repeatedly helps Mrs. Steinmetz resist Hawk's schemes.
Alonzo Hawk seeks to displace Mrs. Steinmetz so he can build a gigantic shopping mall in downtown San Francisco.
The film's bright, unreal atmosphere, miraculous car, child-safe conflict, and Walt Disney Productions identity create a distinctly Disney mode.
