What critics said
Critics generally found it an energetic, cheerful adaptation whose solid gags and playful Muppet performances outweigh a less consistently clever script.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film adapts Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island while having Muppet performers occupy and play with the story's pirate roles.
Critics specifically noted witty anachronistic jokes about codependence, water-skiing, and Henry Kissinger amid the pirate setting.
Tim Curry's Long John Silver is central to the film's appeal, blending ruthless pirate plotting with manic, Muppet-like energy.
The sea voyage, pirate gang, treasure hunt, and peril are framed as energetic, lighthearted family entertainment.
