What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Both police-centered stories turn on chance meetings and short-lived relationships that interrupt profound loneliness.
Wong Kar-wai uses motion blur, saturated color, step-printing, and music to externalize the cops' romantic disorientation.
The film divides its focus between Cop 223 and Cop 663, whose breakups and new encounters form two connected romantic movements.
Cop 223's daily pineapple tins transform a concrete May 1 expiry date into a ritual for measuring heartbreak and hope.
