What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The fictionalized year in Elisabeth's life introduces imaginative encounters and modern-feeling attitudes while retaining her historical identity.
Elisabeth's fixation on weight, beauty, and physical presentation becomes a means of resisting the imperial role imposed on her.
The empress is idolized for beauty yet trapped by court duty, marital estrangement, and relentless public scrutiny.
The film's historical setting is treated with contemporary formal and musical touches that make Elisabeth's alienation feel immediate.
