What critics said
Critics generally recognized the film's ambition, performances, production values, locations, and score while finding its overlong screenplay, thin characterization, and simplified pro-Catholic presentation dramatically heavy-handed.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Cristeros movement organizes armed opposition to anti-Catholic persecution in 1920s Mexico.
The narrative adopts a pronounced pro-Catholic perspective and simplifies competing interpretations of the conflict.
Lavish locations across Mexico, spacious direction, and numerous battle sequences give the story an epic visual scale.
The film foregrounds the underrepresented Cristero War and its place in 1920s Mexico.
