What critics said
Critics generally find the film charming and effective as light romantic farce, especially because of Doris Day's comic performance, while noting that its glossy surface rests on a thin and dated script.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Cathy insists that legitimate marriage and a wedding ring must precede sex, while Philip resists marriage.
Philip is a prosperous businessman arriving in a Rolls Royce, whereas Cathy is seeking ordinary employment after being splashed with mud.
The plot directly treats Philip's resistance to marriage and Cathy's refusal to live in sin as a source of risqué farce.
The affluent courtship extends beyond Manhattan into upscale travel settings, including Philip's Bermuda suite.
