What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Stroud's life in Leavenworth and Alcatraz is organized around his transformation from violent prisoner into a respected bird expert.
Stroud rescues a fallen sparrow, raises birds, and develops medicines for them as an alternative to violence and despair.
Warden Harvey Shoemaker confines Stroud to solitary for life, while his later transfer to Alcatraz separates him from his birds.
The black-and-white imagery and prison interiors reinforce the severe atmosphere of Stroud's confinement.
