What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Detective Chan assumes responsibility for the daughter of a witness killed by Wong Po, making her safety a central moral pressure.
The police investigation, criminal power structures, nighttime city atmosphere, and bleak ethical conflict support a neo-noir reading within Hong Kong action cinema.
The central police and criminal characters are martial arts experts, with Donnie Yen, Wu Jing, and Sammo Hung driving the film's signature physical confrontations.
Ma is appointed to replace the aging Chan as head of the crime unit while Chan seeks early retirement, creating a conflict between generations and policing philosophies.
