What critics said
Critics generally found the film an engaging, politically pointed teen satire, though many felt its critique of Christianity pulled its punches and some objected to its treatment of religion.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Christian school hierarchy repeatedly treats exclusion, sexuality, and personal misconduct as matters of divine authority.
Mary’s pregnancy, Dean’s outing, and the behavior of authority figures force her to question simplistic ideas about sin and salvation.
Hilary Faye’s perfect Christian image contrasts with coercive social behavior, while adults rationalize their own transgressions.
The Christian Jewels, Cassandra’s marginal status, Tia’s outsider aspirations, and Dean’s treatment all revolve around social belonging.
