What critics said
Critics broadly regarded the film as an artificial, clichéd, and poorly executed depiction of 1950s Brooklyn gang life, with especially weak fight staging and melodrama.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Brooklyn gangs are presented through theatrical tough-guy posturing, heightened fights, and melodramatic territorial loyalties.
Leon and Bobby’s Deuces defend their block against the Vipers while linking the mission to their brother’s drug-overdose death.
Leon and Bobby’s relationship is tested by the Vipers and by the Deuces’ willingness to risk death for their territory.
Fight scenes use choppy editing, slow motion, fog, thunder, lightning, and aggressive musical staging.
