What critics said
Critics generally regarded the remake as an effective, well-acted, visually forceful addition to the zombie genre, while finding it less socially pointed than Romero's original.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The remake replaces the original film's slow zombies with rapidly moving attackers, intensifying the opening escape and mall siege.
Ana, Kenneth, and the other survivors use the deserted Crossroads Shopping Mall for shelter while its supplies and security prove temporary.
The opening sequence and subsequent attacks emphasize rapid movement, first-person video-game-like camerawork, and escalating crowd danger.
Critics noted that the film honors Romero's source while giving less attention to its original consumerism and sociopolitical satire.
