What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Devon leaves Harlem for a Southern university and initially struggles with the marching band's culture and expectations.
Marching-band rehearsals, rivalries, and televised competitions structure Devon's rise and the ensemble's goals.
The university drumline and its performance traditions are treated as the film's defining social and artistic world.
Devon's drumming ability is insufficient until he learns that precision, responsibility, and ensemble unity determine success.
