What critics said
Critics broadly regard Wajda’s solemn historical drama as a powerful and politically significant reckoning with the Katyn massacre, strengthened by its emotional seriousness and final atrocity imagery.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Soviet authorities attribute the Katyn massacre to the Germans and imprison or kill those who reject that account.
Anna, Nika, military families, and Krakow society live under the continuing absence of murdered Polish officers and the denial surrounding their fate.
Anna’s search for Andrzej and the general’s family story are interwoven with the mass murder of Polish officers.
The film reconstructs the Katyn massacre and its aftermath with a grave, commemorative emphasis shaped by Wajda’s Polish historical perspective.
