What critics said
Critics broadly found the historical romance lukewarm, with an underdeveloped story and uneven emotional impact despite its period setting and cast.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The story presents an imagined 1926 encounter between Harry Houdini and Scottish psychic tricksters rather than a comprehensive biography.
Houdini's unresolved mourning for his mother motivates the highly publicized séance and his involvement with Mary and Benji.
Mary and Benji initially intend to con Houdini, while Mary's affair with him grows inside that fraudulent scheme.
Houdini's escape artistry and the McGarvies' psychic séance both turn spectacle, belief, and misdirection into public performance.
