What critics said
Critics found the film warmly authentic in its Greek-American family dynamics and ensemble chemistry, but overly predictable, thinly plotted, and weakened by rambling editing.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The death of the family's patriarch and the mother's dementia shape the reunion and its emotional undercurrent.
Toula leads the Portokalos family to Greece to find her father's childhood friends and reconnect with family history.
The Portokalos family's Greek-American traditions and intensely loyal relationships drive the film's comic and emotional scenes.
