What critics said
Critics generally found the film entertaining as a goofy 1980s-styled Johnny Cage spinoff, with its mystery and violent finale providing more satisfaction than its thin or underwhelming story.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Johnny Cage is an aspiring Hollywood star whose one-liners and encounters parody the conventions of cheesy 1980s action cinema.
Jennifer disappears from the film set, sending Johnny into an investigation involving shadows, deceit, and a secret society.
The climactic conflicts feature brutal Netherrealm warriors and blood-soaked fatalities characteristic of Mortal Kombat.
Johnny begins as an action star pursuing A-list status before being forced to confront supernatural threats himself.
