Wasabi
A brusque, recently-suspended French detective reluctantly returns to Japan following the death of a former lover who vanished without explanation nearly two decades prior, a journey complicated by an unexpectedly tenacious – and volatile – yakuza bodyguard assigned to him. What begins as a procedural settling of an estate rapidly descends into a darkly comedic, often-violent collision of cultures fueled by long-held resentments and the unraveling of a past love story. It’s not a tale of romantic rediscovery, but a raw, almost painful exploration of unresolved grief and the lasting consequences of impulsive decisions, punctuated by unexpectedly tender moments and bursts of frantic, slapstick action. The film distinguishes itself through its refusal to soften the detective’s abrasive personality, forcing the audience to reconcile with a flawed protagonist navigating a world equally cynical and chaotic.
