Goya's Ghosts
Within the opulent and increasingly fractured world of 18th-century Spain, Francisco Goya’s artistic ambition collides with the brutal realities of the Spanish Inquisition in a drama steeped in religious fervor and escalating dread. The film explores not a grand historical narrative, but the insidious corruption of power through the desperate plight of a family seeking salvation for a woman, Inés, unjustly accused of heresy – a situation further complicated by an unwanted pregnancy. Goya’s entanglement isn't one of heroic intervention, but a hesitant descent into a moral quagmire as he navigates his complex relationship with the sadistic Inquisitor Lorenzo, whose philosophical justifications for cruelty are as unsettling as his actions. The atmosphere is one of palpable unease, built on the contrast between artistic beauty and religious fanaticism, culminating in a psychological exploration of complicity, faith, and the devastating consequences of unchecked authority.
