A Field in England
Beneath the bleak landscape of 17th-century England, during the fracturing of the Civil War, a band of deserters aren’t pursuing treasure so much as unraveling within a hallucinatory, intensely unsettling pastoral nightmare. Led by a manipulative alchemist, their search for gold quickly dissolves into a descent into paranoia and hysteria, fueled by a uniquely unsettling feast within a mushroom circle. This isn’t a ghost story in the traditional sense, but an exploration of fractured trust and collective madness where the true horror isn’t a supernatural force, but the fragility of the human psyche exposed by isolation and altered states. The film builds a deeply unsettling atmosphere, juxtaposing the brutal realities of the era with increasingly surreal and disorienting sequences, presenting a folk horror experience that emphasizes psychological disintegration over jump scares, and ultimately questions the very nature of reality and the search for enlightenment through forbidden knowledge.
