Jakob the Liar
Amidst the crushing despair of a Nazi-occupied Polish ghetto in 1944, a resourceful Jewish shopkeeper named Jakob spontaneously fabricates a rumor of a hidden radio transmitting hopeful news from the Eastern Front. This seemingly small act of defiance blossoms into a communal lifeline, offering a fragile shield against hopelessness, not through organized resistance, but through the shared, comforting delusion of positive reports. As the fabricated news spreads, Jakob finds himself increasingly burdened by maintaining the fiction, walking a tightrope between bolstering spirits and the terrifying consequences of discovery. The film delicately balances dark humor with the grim reality of the Holocaust, exploring the profound human need for hope even—and especially—when facing utter devastation, and the quiet heroism found in preserving morale rather than waging war.
