Afterlife of the Party
Cassie, a relentlessly outgoing college student, navigates the bewildering and bittersweet reality of existing as a ghost tethered to her best friend Koa, granted a week to mend fractured relationships and unearth unspoken truths after a sudden accident. This isn’t a tale of haunting or spectral scares, but a surprisingly grounded and often hilarious exploration of regret and connection, unfolding with a uniquely whimsical sensibility. As Cassie attempts to influence the living – with limited success and increasingly absurd consequences – the film subtly examines the isolating nature of performative social life and the courage required to embrace genuine vulnerability. It’s a surprisingly cathartic comedy buoyed by a bittersweet atmosphere that allows for moments of poignant emotional release, refusing easy answers about grief and second chances, but finding joy in the messy process of human reconnection.
